When I first got into the summer programme of OSP Scholars, I was beyond excited, and a little nervous.
Two weeks in the UK with people I’d never met before? Attending university-style lectures, working on team projects, and participating in all kinds of random activities, all on the campus of one of the world’s most prestigious universities? It sounded amazing, but I had no idea how summer school actually worked, especially one in another country.
So if you’re wondering how summer school works at OSP, here’s the honest version, and what I wish someone had told me before joining one of the most unforgettable summer programs for high school students.
How Does Summer School Work at OSP (and some Tips to Make the Best of it)
Most days mix morning classes in your chosen course with afternoon workshops, excursions or activities, and free time in the evenings. You live in college accommodation with other scholars, and staff are around to help throughout.
This balance gives you the chance to focus on your academic interests while also exploring Oxford, meeting new people and making the most of your time outside the classroom.
Actually Use Your Free Time
You’ll have more free time than you think. Go explore Oxford, grab coffee with new friends, or run through a park. Some of my best OSP memories happened when we had zero plans.
Making time to explore with your friends can be just as memorable as the scheduled activities. You might discover a favourite café, stumble across a new part of the city or simply enjoy a conversation you wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Manage Your Time Well (So You Don’t Over-Stress)
It’s tempting to spend every second out in the city, but pacing yourself is key. If it ever gets too much, the well-being team is there to help.
Block out time to focus on your final project and attend the optional global leadership workshops. They’re incredibly helpful. The sessions on university applications and personal statements, in particular, were game-changers. I learned things I never would’ve figured out on my own.
Finding the balance between fun and productivity is what makes programmes like OSP so unique and rewarding. Planning ahead means you can enjoy the experience without feeling rushed when deadlines approach.
Say Yes to New Activities and Be Open to New People
If you’ve never been to one of the residential summer camps in the UK before, living with people you’ve only just met can feel strange at first, but it can quickly become one of the best parts.
Whether it’s punting, team challenges, or just playing cards, the moments you almost skip often turn out to be the most memorable. Some of my best nights happened with people I randomly met during lunch, breaks, or even in taxis.
Pro tip: Bring a deck of cards or a small game. It instantly becomes a group activity and makes it easier to bond with new people. Plus, someone will definitely teach you a game you’ve never played before.
Don’t Leave Anything to the Last Day
Seriously, whether it’s wrapping up your project or souvenir shopping, do it early. The final day sneaks up fast, and the last thing you want is to spend it scrambling.
Getting things done ahead of time also leaves you with more opportunities to enjoy your final days with your friends, explore anything you missed and make the most of your remaining time in Oxford.
What to Bring to Summer Camp: My Packing List
Knowing what to bring to summer camp can make settling in much easier. Here are a few essentials worth packing before you travel:
Comfortable shoes. There’s a lot of walking.
A UK plug adapter and a portable charger.
A light rain jacket. It’s England, after all.
A deck of cards or a small game.
A reusable water bottle.
One smart outfit for formal events.
Your passport and travel documents. Check the OSP visa guide before travelling to make sure you understand the relevant requirements.
Packing these essentials in advance means you can spend less time worrying about what you forgot and more time enjoying your experience.
Bonus Tip: Get a UK SIM Card ASAP
A UK SIM card will save you time, stress, and money. Whether it’s looking up directions, coordinating with your group, or just checking the OSP schedule while off campus, having data is a huge help. I would’ve been lost without it, literally.
Sort out your mobile data before or soon after arriving so you can stay connected with your friends and access useful information while exploring. It’s also worth arranging your journey from the airport in advance. Book your airport transfer before you fly and pick up a SIM when you land.
Final Thoughts
If you’re thinking about applying to a summer program for high school students like OSP, go for it. And once you’re there, soak it all in. The programme flies by faster than you think, and it’ll be one of the most impactful learning experiences you’ll ever have.
Whether you’re making new friends, exploring Oxford or discovering an academic interest you want to pursue further, the little moments can end up being the most memorable. Give yourself the freedom to try new things, ask questions and enjoy the experience as it unfolds.
