The Experience

More than a sport.
A tradition.

As part of OSP’s Oxford summer school, rowing sessions on the iconic River Thames give scholars a hands-on introduction to one of Oxford’s most storied traditions.  Led by experienced instructors, these sessions introduce students to the fundamentals of rowing – from technique and coordination to balance and control.

Whether stepping into a boat for the first time or building on prior experience, Scholars are supported every step of the way. Each session is carefully designed to be both challenging and rewarding.

Why OSP SCHOLARS

Rowing here is different

What Students Gain

Building more than strength

Teamwork & Leadership

Rowing is built on synchronisation. Every movement depends on the team working together, teaching Scholars how to communicate, trust, and lead under pressure.

Mental Discipline

Mastering rhythm and technique requires focus and consistency. Scholars develop resilience, patience, and the ability to stay composed in challenging situations.

Physical Confidence

As a full-body activity, rowing builds strength, stamina, and coordination, helping Scholars feel more energised and confident.

Space to Reset

Time on the water offers a rare sense of calm. Away from screens and schedules, Scholars experience clarity, reflection, and mental balance.

A Typical Session

Structured for progress

Every Oxford summer school rowing session at OSP is structured to ensure both safety and progress. Scholars leave not only improved, but more connected to their team and to the experience itself.

What our Scholars say

“The programme struck an ideal balance between academic depth and standout experiences like rowing on the Thames, something uniquely Oxford and deeply tied to its tradition.”

– Zahra Mikhaila, OSP Scholar 2025

“Students were constantly challenged through discussions and debates, while also experiencing exciting activities like rowing and even learning to fly. Along the way, they built meaningful friendships and gained valuable exposure to the world beyond the classroom”
